My work combines pictures/images and paints that I combine on the computer and canvas to create a new image. My favorite subject is the female face. Most of the portraits I create are a mix of four to five faces, mostly of different races and origins. On my computer, I create a new, non-existing person out of them. Besides creating and building new people, I also take pictures of the models I use in my studio. I create a new image with these pictures and the pictures of old walls, grunge posters, and other interesting subjects. I also use existing pictures that I manipulate in Photoshop to create a new image. When the digital part is ready, I print the image and start painting it. I create thick structures and many layers of paint and gel over them. In this way, I try to make the digital image tangible again. My work is not so much about explanation and concept. It is a game and all about the image. I start with no idea in general, but a new image slowly evolves by looking at images that interest me and mixing them.

All works are made on request and of any size or preference. Most of these works are a mix of print, paint, grain gel, heavy gel, and math/gloss coating. The works are made by hand, individually a bit different in editions of max. 25 pieces.

Karin Vermeer is a contemporary Dutch artist who has been living and working in Rotterdam since 2002. Born in Tilburg in 1970, she initially pursued fashion studies before enrolling at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam, where she earned her degree in illustration in 1994. After working as a freelance illustrator and decorator for several years, Vermeer transitioned into creating her own independent artworks, focusing on paintings and murals.

Her lifelong fascination with fashion and female portraits stems from her early years spent browsing fashion magazines. This interest evolved into a critical view of the manipulated images of models, which inspired her unique artistic approach—digitally and manually combining photographs. Vermeer specializes in creating portraits by blending multiple images of different individuals to form entirely new, non-existent faces. She also photographs models in her studio and incorporates these images with textures like old walls and grunge posters.

Her process begins with digital manipulation, followed by printing and layering thick structures of paint and gel, adding a tangible quality to her digital creations. For Vermeer, art is a sensory experience, not bound by explanation or concept. Each piece emerges organically as she explores and mixes images that capture her attention.
