Karen Hurst has enjoyed creating art since her early years growing up in Vernon, BC. She began persuing an art career in 1995 when she attended the first year of the Fine Arts program at Okanagan University College in Kelowna. Her own positive experiences in art classes at highschool at Fulton Secondary School influenced her decision to attend the University of Lethbridge, where she completed a Fine Arts and Education combined degree program. After several years working in Calgary as a Graphic Designer for an oil servcies company Karen has recently moved to Nova Scotia where she continues her graphic design career and also continues to create art, particularly focusing on oil painting. Karen chooses to colourfully capture the beauty and delicate nature of flowers in most of her work. Some of her paintings are relatively large in scale and often give an abstracted and magnified view of flowers reminiscent of the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. She also creates smaller works in the form of tiles to display in a garden or to create a garden-like setting. She hopes to bring her art to a broader audience and allow others to appreciate the beauty and vision of the garden and nature that she sees.
