Biographie / CV
Julien Sunyé est né à Amsterdam en 1982 d’un père français et une mère néerlandaise. Il grandit dans une petite ville dortoir au Nord de la capitale, entourée de champs verts, de canaux et de forêts. Manquant d’amour cela lui fait de la peine de ne pas pouvoir partager son immense appréciation de la beauté naturelle du monde. Ces moments non-partagés sont comme des moments perdus, alors il se met à les photographier pour pouvoir les garder et, un jour son amour trouvé, les partager avec elle.
Inspiré par l’œuvre de Henri Cartier-Bresson et Willy Ronis, il visite souvent Paris dans les années 2000-2004 pour y faire des photos de rue. En 2011 il déménage à Istanbul, et mélangeant ses expériences parisiennes avec la lumière et les couleurs chaleureuses du film Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain, y crée un portrait invitant de cette grande ville.
Ce n’est que quelques années plus tard qu’il tombe malade. Ayant jusque-là financé ses exploits photographiques en travaillant dans la finance, il est contraint de quitter son travail et c’est là que il ne lui reste que son appareil photo. Combattant une grave dépression, il continue à photographier les rues d’Istanbul, restant ainsi connecté au gens et au monde et a un peu d’humanité.
Même si elle ne s’aggrave pas, sa dépression perdurera des années. En 2016 il visite Verdun et y est frappé par l’idée que même si il y a 100 ans depuis le 11 Novembre 1918, la guerre continue toujours, ailleurs et sous d’autres formes. Il s’y reconnait ainsi que tous ceux qui sont emprisonnés dans des âmes en douleur.
Quelques mois plus tard il déménage à Paris pour joindre l’école de photographie Spéos, qu’il quitte après quelques semaines déjà. N’étant toujours pas dans un état de pouvoir reprendre le travail, il décide alors de tout miser sur la photographie avec les économies qui lui restent. Il part faire une série de cinq photos avec les idées qu’il a eues à Verdun. Une série qui prend de l’ampleur au fur et a mesure et qui aboutit par une quarantaine de photos faites sur vingt-cinq endroits entre Amsterdam et Malaga, entre Cherbourg et Berlin., tout en passant par la Suisse pour finir en Italie.

2000 – commence la photo de rue à Paris
2005 – obtient diplômes en Etudes Européennes de l’université d’Amsterdam et en Gestion de l’environnement et des ressources naturelles et de l’Université Libre à Amsterdam.
2012 – publication de son premier bouquin photo Istanbul – portret in vier seizoenen (Istanbul portrait en quatre saisons)
2012 – Mention au concours photo d’Istanbul (organisé par la mairie d’Istanbul (IBB), l’association de photo et de cinéma amateurs d’Istanbul (IFSAK) et l’université des beaux-arts Mimar Sinan (Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi)
2012 – Retourne à Amsterdam pour y travailler au siège social de la banque ING.
2017 – joint l’academie de photo à Amsterdam
2017 – Nomination dans les 3ieme Fine Art Photography Awards

Black Holes voyage photographique de Julien Sunyé
La guerre n'est pas finie, stigmates extérieurs et intérieurs
Paris, le 13/11/2018, “Chaque année, nous célébrons la paix, mais en réalité nous sommes toujours en guerre”. A travers 24 destinations européennes, 54 prises de vues, 26 000 kilomètres, le photographe Julien Sunyé évoque les traumatismes des conflits traversés, ceux que l'on pense avoir oubliés ou ceux que l’on ignore par déni. Ici, la photographie révèle comme un cri "l’être vulnérable en quête de paix". Une série poignante d'une cinquantaine de photographies couleur et noir et blanc qui remet en question l'identité de chacun face à la violence des conflits intérieurs, comme ceux qui ont opposé ou opposent encore les hommes aujourd’hui dans le monde.
Une métaphore de l’humanité
« Black Holes » est une métaphore de l'humanité. Face à la lumière, les corps mis à nus rappellent la fragilité de la nature humaine. Les modèles photographiés sont en survie, ils cherchent à continuer à vivre en paix malgré la vie en danger. Depuis toujours, l'espèce humaine lutte pour apaiser ce qui l’a mise à mal, ces blessures que l’on ne peut jamais tout à fait effacer ni réparer. Julien Sunyé évoque par son travail la recherche de la paix : « Les émotions qui nous traversent trouvent souvent leurs origines dans l’enfance. Il faut du temps, de l'attention et un vrai travail sur soi pour les comprendre et les analyser. Mais la vie moderne laisse hélas peu de place à cette quête intérieure.
Finalement, montrer ses douleurs, c’est apprendre à les surmonter, à faire la paix avec ce que l’on a vécu et créer un futur harmonieux pour soi-même et les autres”.
Cette série rend hommage aux victimes tombées sous la violence collective ainsi qu’à ceux qui sont toujours pris au piège et se battent contre leur propre passé.
La question est : comment peut-on survivre à cette violence et à quel prix? Et que signifient la paix et la liberté quand on est toujours pris au piège d’une violence passée ? “Les guerres commémorées, trompent : la violence n’a pas totalement pris fin. Même si la nature et le temps ont réparé les blessures jusqu’à les rendre invisibles, elles persistent sous une autre forme."
La photographie, acte de résilience
En 2013, Julien Sunyé est plongé dans une dépression sévère dont les causes lui échappent. Elle a pour conséquence de l’empêcher de travailler et d’être dans l’incapacité d’exprimer ses émotions et donc de continuer à vivre. Cherchant à s’en sortir, Julien Sunyé s’intéresse aux différentes formes de traumatismes. Il apprend que le traumatisme de la petite enfance est profondément ancré dans le subconscient et qu’il peut définir le présent. Il comprend qu’on devient alors prisonnier de son passé.
Au cours de l'été 2016, le photographe décide de se rendre sur les champs de bataille de Verdun. Il est alors frappé par l'idée que le passé peut enfermer un individu mais également tout un peuple. Apaisé par le travail photographique qu’il mène ainsi dans plusieurs pays en Europe sur des sites “sensibles ou historiques”, Julien Sunyé sent qu’il est au bon endroit pour mener sa réflexion. Chaque nouvelle séance photographique l’aide à surmonter un peu plus sa dépression jusqu’à parvenir à s’en sortir enfin en septembre 2018.

Photographe autodidacte, Julien Sunyé utilise la photographie dès son enfance comme une collection des meilleurs moments à partager. De cette idée naît une passion indéfectible pour la photographie qui ne le quittera plus et ne cessera de croître. Franco-néerlandais (français par son père et néerlandais par sa mère), il trouve ses inspirations dans le travail d’Henri Cartier Bresson et les peintres Hollandais des 16 et 17e siècle, notamment des tableaux paysagers des 16 et 17e.
