Julie Tanner is a contemporary sculptor based in Bristol, specializing in bronze figurative pieces. Without formal training, she has spent the past few years mastering the fundamentals of sculpting, including armature building, moulding, and patination. Working primarily with oil or water-based clay, Julie creates bronze and resin sculptures, fully embracing her passion for the art form.
Julie has been awarded the Lady Petchey Sculpture Prize twice, in 2021 and 2022, and was a finalist in the VAO Emerging Artist Prize in 2021, 2022, and 2023, as well as the Boynes Emerging Artist Award in 2022. In 2023, she received a grant from Arts Council England to study portrait sculpture in Rome and also traveled to the United States to learn figurative sculpture under award-winning sculptors Kristine and Colin Poole.
Deeply passionate about anatomy and movement, Julie's work captures the intricate details of the human form, from the curve of muscles to the play of light and shadow. Her sculptures aim to freeze fleeting moments of grace and fluidity, combining authenticity with experimentation in style and scale. Through her art, she seeks to evoke a visceral connection with viewers, celebrating the beauty of the human body.
