Joseph Kosuth (b. 1945, Toledo, Ohio) is a Hungarian-American conceptual artist internationally recognized for redefining the nature of art. A pioneer of conceptual art in the 1960s, Kosuth shifted the focus from aesthetic objects to ideas, language, and meaning. He is best known for works like One and Three Chairs and the Art as Idea as Idea series, which explore the relationship between language and perception.
Kosuth studied in Paris and New York, and later taught at leading institutions including Yale, NYU, the Sorbonne, and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Deeply influenced by philosophers like Wittgenstein and Walter Benjamin, he also studied anthropology in the 1970s to expand his understanding of non-Western cultures.
With over 170 solo exhibitions, five Documenta participations, and four Venice Biennale appearances, Kosuth has left a lasting mark on contemporary art. His achievements have been honored internationally, including the title of Chevalier of Arts and Letters in France and the Austrian Decoration of Honour in Gold for Science and Art.
