John Steven Dews, born in 1949 in Yorkshire, England, is a renowned contemporary marine artist celebrated for his highly detailed and realistic depictions of historic naval battles and yachting scenes. Despite early setbacks in formal education, he gained prominence in the 1970s with sold-out exhibitions in London and San Francisco. His works have been commissioned by prestigious institutions such as the Royal Yacht Squadron and the New York Yacht Club. Known for his technical precision and atmospheric mastery, Dews's paintings are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Dews’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in his maritime heritage—his grandfather was Assistant Dockmaster at the Hull docks, and both of his brothers went to sea.
