Biography
Johan Jonsson is a contemporary Swedish sculptor known for his unique approach to mixed media art. Born in 1966 in Luleå, Sweden, Johan has spent most of his life working and studying in his hometown, with brief periods in Stockholm and Gothenburg. Currently, he divides his time between Luleå and a small village outside Skellefteå, where his studio is located.
A self-taught artist, Johan Jonsson explores various forms of artistic expression, including writing, sculpture, and multimedia work. While writing was his primary focus a decade ago, it now complements his visual art, particularly through his ongoing project, The Romanticizer, which integrates both mediums.
Johan's visual art is characterized by sculptures created from a diverse array of materials, including metal, wood, fabrics, tar, leather, wire, dolls, silicone, and rust. His work often begins with metal as the foundation, incorporating materials typically associated with agriculture and forestry, which he juxtaposes with urban elements like plastic, rubber, and toy parts. This eclectic mix of rural and urban materials aligns his work with the "junk art" movement, though terms like "outsider art" and "art brut" more accurately describe his raw, unfiltered artistic style.

“I watched Norman Mailer speak of Hemingway, saying that he, Hemingway, was a man of inconsistencies and that people of inconsistencies often, for that specific reason, turn to art. Maybe that is true for some artists, I don't know. Maybe I’m not that interested in art; but I’m interested in inconsistencies… Putting inconsistent pieces together, colours, shapes that don’t fit. Basically, that’s what I do: I like putting things together; ugly things, broken, things that don’t fit…”

Johan was born in Luleå, Sweden in 1966. Except for a few years in Stockholm and Gothenburg he has worked and studied in Luleå. He now divides his time between Luleå and a little village outside Skellefteå, where his studio is located.
Johan is a self-taught artist who writes, sculpts and uses multimedia for his works. Ten years ago writing was the main focus, now it’s more of a complement to his visual art, even though there’s an ongoing, lifelong, project [The Romanticizer.] that is partly based on writing.
The visual art: It is sculpture in mixed media [metal, wood, fabrics, tar, leather, wire, welding filler, dolls, silicone, rust]. The basis is usually metal, and usually items/materials used in agriculture and forestry. The interest, however, lies in the combination of these rural materials/items and urban ones like plastic, rubber, silicone, parts of dolls and toys…
"Junk art" might be the term when it comes to choice of "material". When it comes to raw artistry, terms like "outsider art" or "art brut" are better suited.
His art is basically a working process which often results in humans, figures, postures, poses. The working process more than often makes us of chance.
