Joe Bradley, born in 1975 in Kittery, Maine, is an American contemporary artist known for his minimalist and abstract approach. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999 and quickly gained attention with his first exhibition in New York. His first solo museum show was held at MoMA PS1 in 2008.
Bradley's work is characterized by simple forms, bold gestural marks, and a restrained color palette, often marked by a deliberately rough and "shoddy" aesthetic. Some of his most well-known works include the "Schmagoo Paintings," which explore biomorphic symbols in a nonfigurative context. Influenced by Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism, Bradley plays with the concept of shared artistic space, creating a dialogue between past and present.
In addition to painting, Bradley explores sculpture and drawing, using unconventional materials like cardboard scraps and sticky notes. Throughout his career, he has exhibited in prestigious shows such as the Whitney Biennial and The Forever Now at MoMA, with works included in major international collections. He lives and works in New York.
