Desi was inspired by a recent trip to India, where I was reminded that the concept of Second Life thrives in the subcontinent. There, many objects live third or fourth lives, transformed and repurposed in ways that give them new meaning. Desi is a fond term for the friends I made and the joyful spirit I encountered everywhere I visited. The sculpture reflects this vibrant energy, built from salvaged materials primarily sourced from India. Most of the components came from the scrap bin of an exporter, including pieces from tika boxes, piano and game parts, colorful loom spindles, and a croquet mallet. Made from eco-friendly, up-cycled materials, Desi is a hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind wooden sculpture, showcasing sustainable art through its creative use of repurposed elements. Its three-dimensional, artist-made design celebrates the vibrant, resourceful spirit of the places and people who inspired it.

In his latest series, Jeff Doud explores three-dimensional wooden sculptures crafted with eclectic remnants and salvage from scrap bins around the world, along with painted cut pieces from his own studio work. These fragments channel the embedded energy of countless hours of human effort into expressive, robust new forms. Jeff captures the inherent humanity from these diverse sources, each construction possessing its own stories, secrets, and opportunities for exploration. Jeff’s latest collection showcases passionate creative experimentation, injecting spirited personality into simple hand-hewn dowel and glue compositions. Incorporating materials from diverse crafts such as weaving, and printing, and integrating worn objects such as musical instruments and children’s toys, the creations are striking, confident, playful, and full of optimism.

Born in Santa Monica, California in 1954, Jeff Doud has shown in group and solo exhibitions in Atlanta, Berlin, and West Palm Beach. His creations and commissioned works can be found in private collections from LA to NY. He resides in Atlanta, Georgia, where he has lived and worked in the creative arts for over thirty years.
