A painter of grandiose or more secret vanitas, most often in large format, Vallon does not judge. He bears witness simply, intuitively. Better still, he suggests. It's up to each of us to read, to see, to understand. The liquefaction of faces, the slow transformation of the living, its gradual slide into a plant state, vines or poisonous and carnivorous flowers, all this offers itself up for meditation in an excess of beauty, mystery, and terror…
Jean-Philippe Vallon was introduced to painting by the Drôme painter Jean-Robert. At a young age, he entered his world of spheres and silence, close to surrealism in some respects, but powerfully delving into his own obsessions. This is where his attraction to spheres comes from, particularly those that invite us to follow the movement of the planets and stars known as armillaries.
For Jean-Philippe Vallon finds in this fascinating instrument something to nourish and extend his vision. An ideal evocation of the vast universe, the armillary sphere once again connects him to the ideal of the Renaissance and, from there, to ancient Greece, whose myths and symbols he enjoys scrutinizing. Based on these influences, these aesthetic and philosophical twists, a whole section of his work can be read as a play of correspondences and unformulated questions: spheres, cogs, cerebral or monumental architecture, inhabited statuary... compose, bordering on the fantastic, an immense dream of harmony where time plays a peaceful role, where stone faces seem to float gently in an eternity that nothing can disturb. A creature of his thoughts, the painter is also their willing plaything.
