Le temps alors tisse une de ces toiles dont on drape les souvenirs et où l’on coud des robes de fête.
Des restes de lumière se posent sur les tables des cafés bruns. Puis, comme font les jours de décembre, vont se cacher vite dans l’ombre sous les chaises.
Festins enfuis aux reliefs qui s’estompent...
Restent des traces étranges. Traces d’échanges passionnés brodés de certitudes et d’outrancières simplifications. Tissées de confusions et de rires mêlés. Parfumées d’odeurs de tabac. Gardiennes d’arrière-goûts sucrés de bière.
Restent sur les tables les gouttes de cire tombées des bougeoirs du soir et la lueur qui s’éteint sur le verre presque vide.
Viennent les rêves avec leurs reflets sur le vert des absinthes donneuses de folie, donneuses de génie. Reviennent Van Gogh, Cézanne, Matisse et, dans les solitudes lumineuses, un surprenant Hopper joyeux.

Ce texte a été écrit en rebond à partir de l'oeuvre peinte, à la façon d'une chanson où la peinture serait la musique et les mots seraient les paroles. Depuis plusieurs année, ces textes sont rassemblés et édités.
L'oeuvre fait partie d'une série "CAFÉS" qui compte 31 toiles au 28 décembre 2019. Il s'agit de scènes de genre avec échange entre plusieurs personnages.
.Jean-Paul Schmitt is a professional painter based in the Monts du Lyonnais, France. With nearly thirty years of painting experience, Schmitt initially spent fifteen years as an actor, during which he wrote and staged several plays. He is a member of the Lyons Academy of Painting (ALP), the Regional Association of Arts (ARA), and the Group of Twelve. In addition to his visual art, he integrates texts he writes into his canvases, creating a unique blend of literary and pictorial elements.
Schmitt is listed in Guid'Arts 2018 and i-CAC and has been recognized for his work with numerous awards, including the Special Prize of the Rhône County Council (2014), the Boesner Prize (2014), the International Art Award of Beijing (2016), the Gold Medal of the Jury and Grand Prize of the Salon de Rive de Gier (2017), the Special Prize of the Jury of the Winter Show of Lyon (2018), the Great Trophy of the Arts Artists of Honor of the Year 2018 from the Editions of Museums and Culture, and the Silver Medal of the French Association of Arts, Sciences and Letters (2019).
Schmitt's work is characterized by its focus on the landscapes of the countryside around Saint-Martin-en-Haut, including melancholic granaries and bucolic interiors. He is known for his daring use of format, color, and texture, aiming to elevate his subjects to prominence. His current series explores coffee interiors reminiscent of New York’s Café Society, showcasing his mastery of color and form to convey tranquility and peace. Schmitt's paintings have been described as powerful and enduring, reflecting both contemporary art evolution and new expressive approaches to the figurative. His work has garnered international acclaim for its originality and technical excellence.
