Through this painting, I seek to explore the human condition in the context of modern urban life. These three figures symbolize the contemporary urban individual. Their dark, formal clothing evokes a uniformity or social conformity, accentuated by bowler hats, a symbol associated with the business world and urban society. I have arranged them with their backs to the viewer, in contemplation or expectation disconnected from what they are observing. "City people" have lost touch with nature, the simple, authentic elements of life, which have become nothing more than artificial representations: balloon animals. They are the symbol of nature and simple life, elements that we city dwellers have transformed into mere distractions, futile objects. The dog, the sheep, the hen represent aspects of life that, in a rural or natural context, would have profound meaning, but in the city, are nothing more than distant memories, floating illusions without real substance. The solitary tree in the background is a metaphor for nature itself, which has become distant and unattainable for these characters. It stands beneath a dark, almost threatening sky, as if to remind us that nature, though ever present, watches us with a kind of silent sadness, aware of our distance. My intention here is to capture the essence of a society that, as it develops, seems to be moving further and further away from its roots, from nature, and perhaps even from its humanity. I wanted the viewer to feel this disconnection, this nostalgia for a more authentic time or state of being. "City People" is therefore an invitation to question what we are losing in our quest for progress, to reflect on humanity's place in an increasingly artificial environment, and to rediscover that vital connection with nature that we seem to have abandoned.

Jean-Paul Becker is a contemporary French artist deeply rooted in an artistic legacy, being the son and grandson of directors. His early exposure to photography, cinema, and advertising shaped his eclectic artistic journey, ultimately leading him to discover painting as his most personal mode of expression. Influenced by surrealism, Becker creates immersive worlds where humor, mischief, and sensitivity intertwine, revealing the paradoxes of society.

His creative process reflects a unique vision of the world, akin to the way he imagined stories and video clips before fully understanding the lyrics of the songs he listened to. This imaginative approach continues as he navigates the complexities of life, painting his interpretations of its inconsistencies and contradictions. Becker is particularly attuned to humanity's behavior toward the planet and our voracity, with his artwork serving as a projection of his emotional responses to these observations.

His paintings range from humorous to darker themes, but he consistently infuses a sense of humor into his work. Inspiration strikes him from various sources—a sound, a conversation, nature, or even a scent—igniting his creativity. Before beginning a piece, Becker sketches while visualizing colors, exclusively using the three primary hues—yellow, blue, and red—mixing them to achieve the desired shades.

Becker believes in leaving space for the viewer's imagination, appreciating that interpretations of his work may differ from his own. This diversity of perception is where the true sharing of art begins. Through painting, he expresses what he often finds difficult to articulate in words, inviting others to engage with his artistic vision.
