The flower of the blue lotus was closely associated with the sun. In the morning, when the sun rises, the petals open. At night, when the sun goes down, the petals close again. Because of this, the ancient Egyptians believed it to be intimately connected with the sun god Ra. Some stories in ancient Egypt tell us that life as we know it blossomed from a Blue Lotus flower at the dawn of time. I drew inspiration for this painting from these beautiful stories and myths, and hope to impart to the viewer a transcendent state beyond this reality.
