Le pont Van-Gogh est un pont-levis à double-levis.
Le pont Van-Gogh fait partie d’une série de onze ponts identiques établis le long du Canal de navigation d’Arles à Bouc, inauguré en 1837.
Ces ponts, construits par un ingénieur hollandais dans les années 1820-1830, rappellent à l’artiste Vincent van Gogh sa patrie, ce qu’il mentionne dans une lettre.
À l’époque, on l’appelait pont de Langlois, d’après l’homme qui le gardait et manipulait les commandes d’abaissement ou de levée du pont.
Vincent van Gogh, comprenant mal, le nomme pont de l’Anglais, et c’est pour cela que ce nom, changé en pont de l’Anglois, persiste toujours.
Le pont original a été détruit en 1926 et remplacé par un pont en arc en béton armé en 1930.
Le pont actuel, identique à tous les autres, a été démonté en 1959 et installé en 1962 sur le même canal, à quelques kilomètres en aval du pont original.
Les piles du pont, les façades et les toitures de la maison pontière sont inscrites au titre des monuments historiques depuis 1986.
Le pont Van-Gogh a été classé en 1988.
Peintures de Van Gogh:
Peu de temps après son arrivée à Arles, Vincent van Gogh a peint différentes versions du pont-levis juste au sud de la ville, entre mars et mai 1888.
Il a réalisé quatre tableaux (huiles sur toiles), deux dessins, une aquarelle et un croquis représentant ce pont.
Dans une lettre au peintre Émile Bernard, il évoque son intention de s’emparer du sujet du pont et décrit les matelots remontant avec leurs amoureuses vers la ville, avec le pont levis en silhouette sur un énorme soleil jaune

While acknowledging the influence of esteemed artists such as Claude Monet and Nicolas de Staël, Peyrelevade attributes much of his artistic ethos to the Provençal school. Exhibitions featuring luminaries like Monticelli, Jean-Baptiste Olive, Marquet, Camoin, Verdilhan, Seyssaud, Ambrogiani, and Toncini left an indelible mark on his artistic sensibilities, shaping his distinctive expressionist style.
With each stroke of his brush, Jacques Peyrelevade breathes life into his canvases, capturing the essence of the world around him in a mesmerizing symphony of color and light, perpetuating the legacy of his artistic lineage while carving out a unique narrative of his own.
