A Beginners Guide to Painting on Canvas
Painting on canvas is becoming more and more popular. This guide will teach you what to know before taking the steps to start painting on canvas. In this article by talented painter Jacob Farkas you will learn everything from choosing your preferred medium to using the right brushes, learn everything you need to know about painting on canvas.
Choosing your preferred medium
So, now that you've decided to start painting on canvas, what should you do next?
First things first: You need to decide what kind of medium you want to use. Oil paints are the most popular and will give the best results for beginners. But acrylic paint is also a good option because it's easier to work with, doesn't require layers, and can be used with watercolors or airbrush.
Jacob Farkas shares that pigment-based inks are also a good choice if you're looking for more precision and detail. One downside is that they don't wash out easily so they'll require more time and skill at first.
Understanding the different types of paint
Before you start painting, Jacob Farkas claims that it's important that you understand the different types of paint. This will help you make an educated decision on what paint to use and where to find supplies.
Two main types of paint are water-based paints and oil-based paints. Water-based paints are commonly purchased at craft stores or online, whereas oil-based paints cannot be found in most craft stores or online.
Jacob Farkas indicates that oil-based paints work well for canvas because they have a matte finish and tend to last longer than water-based paints. In addition, oil is more opaque than water- based paint and locks in pigment better, which means less bleeding through the surface of your painting. However, if you want to use an oil-based paint on a canvas that won't be exposed to moisture or oils in the future, consider using a water- based acrylic paint instead.
Jacob Farkas indicates that water-based paint is generally easier to use because it dries quickly, but it can bleed through the surface of the canvas if not applied correctly. It also contains pigments like acrylics that give paintings more opacity and a more vibrant color palette than oil does.
However, Farkas prefers using oil-based paint for his paintings.
These tips by Jacob Farkas will help you start painting on canvas.
