História do Bairro da Bica / Bica's Neighborhood history

Na freguesia de S. Paulo, em Lisboa, encontra-se uma das ruas mais lindas da nossa capital e não só. No passado ano de 2017, esta foi considerada uma das sete ruas mais belas do mundo: a Rua da Bica, também conhecida por Calçada da Bica, ou rua do Elevador da Bica. Em estreita ligação com o rio Tejo, o Bairro da Bica é um dos mais pitorescos de Lisboa e é dono duma encruzilhada de calçadas, escadarias, becos e vielas. Segundo dita a história deste bairro, a sua inclinação deve-se a uma catástrofe natural. No século XVI, mais precisamente no ano de 1597, um desmoronamento de terras entre o Alto de Santa Catarina e o Alto das Chagas due origem a um vale que deu o actual aspecto íngreme ao Bairro da Bica.
Na época, “Lisboa era muito procurada por pessoas de fora que queriam trabalhar no rio” – o que resultou num “grande aumento populacional e fez com que as zonas da Bica, São Paulo e Boavista fossem habitadas por mareantes, pescadores, aguadeiros, peixeiras e todo o tipo de vendedeiras.” Acredita-se que o nome deste bairro se deve à existência de “uma bica cuja água flui ruidosamente para um tanque do século XVIII, no Pátio de Broas ou Vila Pinheiro, na Calçada da Bica.”
Para além desta bica, esta zona é ainda composta pela Calçada da Bica Pequena, o Beco dos Aciprestes, a Bica Duarte Melo, o Largo de S. Antoninho, a Rua do Almada e, claro está, o ‘mui’ famoso Elevador da Bica. É este transporte, na maioria com a airosa cor amarela, que estreita os laços entre a Bica, Santa Catarina e Bairro Alto. Todavia, “nem todas as bicas e fontes se resumem à toponímia. Construída em 1675, a Bica dos Olhos é conhecida pela sua eficácia no tratamento de doenças dos olhos. Neste bairro, eram frequentes os pregões dos aguadeiros, na sua grande maioria Galezes, que enchiam as ruas de sons e de presença humana. Em Lisboa, a falta de água era frequente.” Para além disso, as bicas e fontes eram habitualmente locais de encontro” e namoricos :) .

In the parish of S. Paulo, in Lisbon, you will find one of the most beautiful streets of our capital and not only. Last year 2017, it was considered one of the seven most beautiful streets in the world: Rua da Bica (Bica street), also known as Calçada da Bica, or Rua do Elevador da Bica (the Elevator's Bica street).
