"There Comes Rain", Vila Nova de Milfontes, South of Portugal
This small village is a parish in the Odemira’s municipality, in the Alentejo’s region, southern Portugal. In 2011 its population was about 5,000 inhabitants. Before the population of this village lived mainly from fishing and now the live mainly from tourism.
A bit of History: when finished the Christian reconsquest, this region was sparsely populated and disorganized. In the reign of King Afonso III, this king donated much of this region to Santiago Order for the reward of great help in the fight against the Moors. In 1486, since this land is enriched by the river Mira and the Atlantic Ocean, King John II founded a new village at a place called Milfontes. Then sought to promote not only the development of commercial transactions via river and sea, as well as their protection against pirate attacks. At the time this region was plagued by pirates, who plundered and robbed the people and boats. For this reason, later, in the late sixteenth century, King Philip II ordered the construction of the Fort of St. Clement – in the left side of the painting is visible a part of that edification, that in this was transformed into a comfortable hotel, since Vila Nova de Milfontes is one of the most beautiful tourist stops in southern Portugal.
Historically this village is also linked to an achievement of the Portuguese aviation, since it was in this region (in Campo de Coitos), that in April 7 of 1924 the airmen Brito Paes and Sarmento Beires left for what would be the first crossing air between Portugal and Macau.
