É sede de município e tem um pouco mais de 44 mil habitantes. Foi elevada a cidade em 1985. Segundo alguns estudiosos, a origem do seu nome derivou da palavra árabe «AL-HAIN», que significa fonte nascente. Ao longo dos tempos e depois de algumas modificações fonéticas e fonológicas - ALHAM e depois OLHAM - a palavra terá levado ao aparecimento do termo final e que usamos hoje: OLHÃO .
Uma das características da arquitectura local são, precisamente, a abundância de Açoteias (terraços)e varandas . Dir-se-ia que é quase impossível encontrar uma casa sem açoteia e/ou varanda.
Para saber a História desta cidade recomendo a Wikipédia, porque creio ser fidedigna e a mais extensa que encontrei. É só escrever a palavra Olhão no browser.

Inês Dourado was born in 1958, in Portugal. She has a degree in Art History and a Master in History of Contemporary Art from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences. Dourado exhibited her works in Portugal, Spain and Argentina, and her works are in private collections in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, France, Brazil, China, Australia and the USA.
