Herbert W. Franke (* May 14, 1927 in Vienna) is one of the most important German speaking science fiction authors. He also is active in the fields of future research, cave research as well as computer graphics and digital art.

Franke studied physics, mathematics, chemistry, psychology and philosophy in Vienna where he was born. 1950 he did his doctorate in theoretical physics by writing a dissertation about eclectron optics. Since 1957 he works as a freelance author. From 1973 to 1997 he held a lectureship in "Cybernetical Aesthetic" at Munich University (later computer graphic - computer art). 1979 he is co-founder of Ars Electronica in Linz/Austria. 1979 to 1980 he takes over a lectureship in "introduction to perception psychology" at the Bielefeld University of Design. Also in 1980 he becomes a selected member of the German PEN club and is awarded a professor. A collection of essays titled "The Green Comet" was his first book publication. 1998 Franke attended a Siggraph Art Show in Orlando and was a juror at "VideoMath Festival" Konrad Zuse-Zentrum, Berlin. Moreover he took part in innumerable performances and presentations.

2003 his book "Vorstoß in die Unterwelt - Abenteuer Höhlenforschung" (Approach to the Underworld - Adventure Cave Research) was published.
2004 he published his latest novel "Sphinx 2".
2006 "Cyber City Süd" came out.
The well-known weekly German newspaper "Die Zeit" calls him "the most prominent German writing Science Fiction author".
