In the tradition of Painting/Writing, Hélène Courset paints traces and rhythms, in abstract and organized propositions. Transparencies and opacities play on visual sensations and respond to each other in a dialogue that never ceases to evolve and reinvent itself according to the canvases that are woven. The transparency of blacks or colors acts like an X-ray and allows the gaze to be taken beyond the foreground.
Verticality and horizontality are the essential and dominant structures of his works where the straight line punctuates the space and affirms the first gesture of the designer.
Thus, a gestural choreography, slow or hurried, is put in place and the repetition of the gesture allows him to integrate the notion of time in the act of painting, writing and rhythm in the space of the canvas.
The series are treated in flat tints in black and white or in color and attempt to approach the notion of stability, balance, ordered and organized rhythm.
This is a question of a "seriative" work in which the support occupies all its importance and influences the type of traces executed: Plexiglas, free canvases or on frames, papers, volumes are all supports with diverse and varied qualities that I use and which provide elements of response to my pictorial questions.
Hélène Courset projects herself into spaces of colors and rhythms in neutral territory, without any particular discourse, without any narrative story: the subject is painting, a space for breathing and writing, a parenthesis from the world around us. Her series oscillate between abstraction and figuration where the lines evoke drawing by the line.
The artist works in a minimalist spirit to retain only the essential of the color and the trace. She paints as one writes using a gesture that is often straight and vertical, sometimes wavy and moving. The hand dances and exercises a rhythmic choreography. Returning to the first gestures means giving up, making choices, affirming.
The notions of sign, visual recognition and repetition have a preponderant place in his approach.
