Maar niet alleen de algemene sfeer van het onderwerp is belangrijk, ook het licht in de originele foto is voor mij cruciaal voor een geslaagde tekening. Ik hou van een realistische tekenstijl en ik let bij de keuze van mijn onderwerp dus op hoe bepaalde details uitkomen in het licht: de rimpels in iemands gezicht of de veertjes van een pluizige pinguïn zijn details die zo heerlijk zijn om te tekenen, dat ze me mee doen besluiten welke foto aan de basis zal liggen van mijn volgende tekening.

Ik maak mijn houtskooltekeningen met een combinatie van houtskoolstokjes en penselen. De penselen zijn een noodzaak voor de detaillering die ik zo belangrijk vind voor een realistische weergave. Terwijl sommige andere houtskoolkunstenaars witte potloden gebruiken voor het aanbrengen van lichtaccenten, blijf ik liever trouw aan het medium: ik breng de lichtaccenten aan door het zwarte pigment weg te gommen, waardoor mijn tekeningen enkel met houtskool tot stand komen.
