Michael Bokrosh is a contemporary American artist renowned for his innovative work in optical art glass sculpture. His creations, deeply personal and spiritual, reflect various facets of his soul, each piece embodying its own mythology and unique narrative.
In 1986, Bokrosh’s artistic journey with optical glass began when glass artist Greg Engelsby introduced him to a piece of bright, clear, optical glass. This material, readily available in the United States, captivated Bokrosh and ignited a creative transformation. Inspired, he ordered raw optical glass, envisioning sculptures within the crystal blocks. By the end of the year, he had completed his first full production line of optical art glass paperweights.
In 1988, Bokrosh received a scholarship to attend the prestigious Pilchuck Glass School, where he trained under renowned Italian glass masters Loredano and Dino Rosin. The Rosin brothers’ expertise in combining hot- and cold-worked sculptural glass profoundly influenced Bokrosh, inspiring him to shift his focus toward fine sculptural art glass. By 1990, he dedicated himself to creating large-scale optical art glass sculptures, which garnered widespread attention. His works were showcased in over a dozen respected art galleries nationwide, including four solo exhibitions between 1990 and 1995.
In 1996, Bokrosh envisioned creating monumental optical glass sculptures. To achieve this, he designed and built a custom machine capable of cutting and polishing massive pieces of optical glass. His ambition led him to acquire a 3,500-pound piece of transparent gold optical glass from Pilkington Glass in England. This material became the foundation for Mergingold, the first sculpture in his Monumental Glass Series, completed in 2000. Since then, Bokrosh has continued to expand this series, crafting monumental glass sculptures that push the boundaries of his medium while capturing intricate and captivating designs.
