Pavilhão oficial do Reino Português, foi criada durante o reinado de D João II, o “Príncipe Perfeito”, que reinou de 1481 a 1495, e, com seu falecimento foi adotada pelo novo rei, seu filho D. Manuel I, o Venturoso, até 1521. Esta bandeira estava presente nas naus do descobrimento do Brasil, até 1521, além da Bandeira da Ordem de Cristo.
Branca, com a cruz desta ordem, apresenta o escudo real sobreposto a ela. Esse escudo, presença marcante em nossas bandeiras até nossa independência, é avermelhado contendo sete castelos de amarelo ouro, tendo no centro um campo branco seguindo a forma do escudo, com cinco escudetes azuis em cruz. Nestes pequenos escudos azuis estão representados cinco besantes em branco. Os castelos foram acrescentados quando Portugal, no início do Século XIII, conquistou Algarve, pois eram as armas do vencido.
