Gian Genta, born in Savona, is recognized as one of the most notable ceramic sculptors on the international scene, currently dedicating his work almost exclusively to ceramics. In 2007, he received the Critics' Award at the national level, marking a key moment in his career. His talent was further recognized in 2011, when he was selected twice for the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 2012, Genta earned second place for sculpture and mixed media at The International Art Contest in Bongaree, Australia. His works gained further international exposure in 2013, being selected for the China Jingdezhen International Ceramic Fair and exhibited at the Undergroundzero Ocnele Mari international exhibition in Romania, where he also won first place at The International Art Contest in Australia.
In 2014, Genta exhibited at the Monte Carlo Biennale, and one of his sculptures was permanently installed in the town square of Varazze (SV). His exhibitions are curated by Dr. Giorgia Cassini, former Artistic Director of the 2011 Venice Biennale, and his works are present in numerous public and private collections worldwide.
Genta has been a frequent visitor to the Albissolese artistic circles since the 1960s and 1970s, debuting at the Rome Quadrennial and forging friendships with leading figures in Italian art, including Jorn, Lam, Fabbri, Sassu, and Fontana. In the mid-1960s, he joined the Nuova Figurazione group, which sought to recover traditional figurative elements while incorporating the gestural techniques of Action Painting.
His sculptures are characterized by the centrality of the female figure and a new expressionism, with a color palette dominated by yellow, red, and green. These colors are used not to evoke vitality, but to convey a sense of uncertainty and the enigmatic aspects of existence. His works embrace the unpredictability of oxides and enamels during firing, reflecting the uncontrollable nature of the creative process through fire.
