Georges Dumas is a French visual artist born in 1975. He creates works he calls "paintographies," i.e., mixed-media works on canvas that combine photography, digital composition, and acrylic painting. The human figure is the primary subject of these works, with a significant focus on the nude and drapery, in keeping with the statuary of Antiquity and the Renaissance. The intersection of techniques and the importance given to mineral materials that replace the flesh of the models make paintographies unclassifiable works, both classic and contemporary, familiar and strange, on the borders of painting, sculpture and photography, in an aesthetic of freezing and petrification that justifies talking about virtual sculpture.

He has presented his work in France and Europe since 2007 through solo and group exhibitions in galleries, fairs (Fotofever, Art Up, Art Montpellier) and exhibitions (MacParis, Puls’Art, Figuration Critique, ArtCité, Solid’Art, etc.)

With 6 other artists, he founded the Transfiguring movement in December 2014 and is one of its main leaders. We owe him the text of the book published in 2018 which presents the artistic approach of the group as well as most of the texts in the media. He regularly gives lectures on the place of Transfiguring in contemporary photography.

After his work was published in November 2019 in the magazine Niepcebook, he began a collaboration with the publisher Corridor Eléphant as an author of texts on other artists; in December 2021, a 178-page monograph retracing the first 15 years of his artistic career was published by the same publisher. In early 2022, a six-week retrospective was held at the Chapelle Saint-Pry in Béthune.

Since this major exhibition, Georges Dumas has produced around a hundred works on canvas, continuing his exploration of materials and the human figure…
