Growing up with a strict father in Japanese society, which emphasizes maintaining harmony, I couldn’t express or celebrate my individuality. Eventually, I found a beautiful way to share through my art.I started working with cardboard when a long romantic relationship ended. At this time, I began to gravitate more towards creating art to resolve my feelings. Manipulating the cardboard and tearing paper felt right at the time and still does.I primarily create mixed-media portraits. Eyes, in particular, fascinate me—they can instantly tell stories and naturally connect to the cores of others.Japanese patterns influence details within my compositions. These imperfect marks reflect life’s challenges; art doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.

Noriko Fukui is a contemporary Japanese painter based in Canada. She was unable to express or delight in her uniqueness because of her upbringing with a strict father in a Japanese culture that places a strong emphasis on keeping harmony. She eventually discovered a lovely way to communicate through her work.

Noriko Fukui specializes in mixed-media portraiture. She is particularly fascinated by eyes since they can instantaneously tell stories and make connections with people on an emotional level. Her compositions' fine details are influenced by Japanese patterns. These imperfections serve as a reflection of life's difficulties; beautiful art doesn't have to be perfect.
