Chichi Biguine looks like a cartoon but isn't! It is an interactive work. Here an animation among an infinity of possible version by the program. In 1970, Robert Crumb designed the AngelFood and Mr. Natural puppets that had to be cut out and assembled to animate them. Today, Frédéric Durieu replaces strings and rubber bands with codes and mathematical formulas thanks to the PuppetTool© software that he created by Frédéric in 2001. This tool interactively animates articulated characters using calculations made in real time. In Chichi Biguine, an appropriate sequence of movements makes the puppets dance. The gestures of the public activate Mr Natural. The animation is generated live by and for the spectators; it therefore tells an infinite number of stories. This form of expression that creates poetry through computer code is called “algorithmic poetry”. Exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris from April 13 to August 19, 2012.
