Do artistic creators in the 21st century have the exclusive task of making the beautiful, pleasing, decorative and apolitical the subject of their art products? Art as a lifestyle attribute for home furnishings? Or do the man-made catastrophes of the present demand that political processes be critically accompanied? The artist as a seismograph for disaster?
Politicians are incessantly creating narratives with pictures and words that serve their own interests. They manipulate their voters in a targeted manner with iconic self-presentations. The artist Franz Huempfner takes up these pictures and text phrases and responds to these pictures with a critical counter phrase. Here he uses the colors of Andy Warhol from his dollar graphic screen print in the style of pop art.
Former American President Trump liked to stage himself as an ardent patriot with the slogan "make america great again" on his cap. He repeated this slogan countless times during his presidency as if brainwashing his supporters. Franz Huempfner uses the suggested patriotism of the original photo in an abstract form together with dollar notes on which like a satirical illustration the head of the president can be seen. In fact, Trump underwrote the checks issued to the distressed American people in the wake of the Corona crisis with his signature. The abstracted press image with its associated narrative is placed in a new context together with the banknotes.
