Franz Defregger (1835-1921) was an Austrian painter and sculptor, famous for his depictions of peasant life in Tyrol, as well as his historical scenes and portraits. Born on April 30, 1835 in Stronach, near Dölsach in East Tyrol, he grew up in a wealthy peasant family, which allowed him to obtain a good initial education. His interest in art began at an early age, but it was not until he had managed the family farm for several years that he decided to pursue an artistic career. p>

Defregger began his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1860, where he was influenced by the works of Carl Theodor von Piloty, a painter renowned for his dramatic historical scenes. Under the aegis of Piloty, Defregger developed his characteristic style, mixing realism and romantic idealization of rural life and Tyrolean traditions. His works earned him great popularity and numerous honors, including the Bavarian Order of Merit.

Among his most famous paintings is 'The Defense of the Bridge of St. . ability to capture the spirit and character of his compatriots. Defregger was also known for his portraits, in which he captured the features and emotions of his subjects with precision and sensitivity.
