The point of view of this fabulous sculpture of Velazquez, created by Aniceto Marinas in 1899 and located next to the Prado Museum, permits to appreciate two relevant traits of the genius painter: his artistic facet as well as his knightly and courageous one. These two attributes, his adventurous spirit and sensitivity, help form this artwork. Velazquez appears surrounded by four rainbow lorikeets from the Australian subtropical forests, with an outfit that emulates their colors.

This piece represents a reciprocal relationship: on the one hand, these flashy birds seem to be the whimsical occurrence of a brilliant painter (observe the tip of the brush, which shows the colors that make up the parrots); and on the other hand, the painter’s clothing appears tinged with the same tones of the birds, as if it was the beauty of nature which causes for the first time the sensitivity love art or to become an artist.

The Artist’s Inspiration reminds us that it is not only important to cultivate our artistic sensitivity and to protect the environment; it is also a need to be brave, to have courage throughout our lives.

El punto de vista de esta fabulosa escultura de Velazquez, realizada por Aniceto Marinas en 1899 y situada junto al museo del Prado, permite apreciar dos rasgos fundamentales del genial pintor: su faceta artística así como su faceta osada y caballeresca, representada por su florete. Estas dos cualidades, su espíritu aventurero y su sensibilidad, ayudan a dar forma a esta obra, en la que se muestra a Velázquez rodeado de 4 loritos arcoiris de los bosques subtropicales de Australia, con una vestimenta que emula sus colores.

Esta composición viene a representar una relación recíproca: por un lado, el colorido de estas llamativas aves parece la caprichosa ocurrencia de un genial pintor (obsérvese la punta del pincel, que muestra los colores que componen a los loritos); por otro, la vestimenta del pintor aparece teñida con los mismos tonos de las aves, como si fuera la belleza de la naturaleza la que despierta por primera vez la sensibilidad en una persona para amar el arte o convertirse en un artista.
