This series is about Sobrainho dos Gaios the village where I reside since 2018. I always had a dream to change my urban life in Lisbon for a peaceful rural place where I could become inspired by nature and grow my own food. This dream came through and after having bought and renovated a small house I now live in the aldeia of Sobrainho dos Gaios. Life here is not as simple as I thought it would be specially in terms of keeping my career going. The village is very remote and far from a cultural hub and am still trying to adjust to my new way of life.

These images were selected to show what was considered the biggest fire of 2023 which happened in Portugal more precisely approximately 5kms from my village Sobrainho dos Gaios. Some of these images also intent to show the extreme drought that the vegetation suffered during that summer.

These series of photographs in black and white and shot at night were influenced by the work of Dido Moriama the Japanese photographer that I admire. Grain and blur are characteristic of his work. Two women sat together and one of them needed to share a problem that was troubling her. Her friend listened attentively. The woman in black seemed sad and a problem troubled her. she sat alone and talked to herself whilst. From time to time she would check on her bag and then carry on the monologue.

Biography
Fatima Fernandes is a photographic and digital artist born in 1955 in Chimoio, Republic of Mozambique. She earned a law degree from Eduardo Mondlane University. She now lives in Portugal, in the village of Sobrainho dos Gaios.
Although she has no formal art training, Fatima Fernandes has been practicing as a professional artist since 1987. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and is included in art collections primarily in Southern Africa. . She has participated in events and artistic residencies.
Fatima Fernandes is a collage and mixed media artist whose approach is expressionist and figurative. Gestural marks, drawings and scribbles build many juxtaposed layers that give density to his work.
Fatima Fernandes also broadened her interest in digital photography and digital collage by taking a photography course at Atelier de Imagem in Lisbon. Her work is testimony to her passion for art and her ability to explore new creative grounds using different techniques.

O Tempo da transiçao
Living in a time of extreme greed, social injustice, corruption and threats of extintion of all living beings at. a planetaty level be it caused by wars or climate change and after giving it much thought I felt compelled to try. to create a series of works in mixed media with the intent of addressing these iniquities. The works are still in a very incipient stage and the image inserted here is just a small fragment of a sketch.
