Oil On CanvasLithuaniaEuropeOriginal PaintingLoose Brushstrokes
Eva Mili is a contemporary Lithuanian painter whose work spans a broad range of themes, including still life, animalism, and figurative art. However, she finds the most joy in creating portraits. She delights in seeing how the rough strokes of a palette knife (mastichin) can magically transform into lifelike representations of people, each imbued with their own unique personalities and moods.
Mili's use of the wet-on-wet technique adds spontaneity and dynamism to her work. This technique requires the main layer of the painting to be completed before the first strokes begin to dry, allowing her to easily introduce new colors, alter shapes, and blend objects and their edges. Her creative process is highly dynamic, often deviating from her initial plans, resulting in a final piece that is heavily infused with her thoughts and emotions. The limited timeframe for completing each painting pushes her to work with precision, minimize mistakes, and fully invest herself in the process.
Mili's journey as an artist has been unconventional. She initially studied at an art school but later chose to pursue exact sciences, earning both a bachelor's and a master's degree in computer science from Kaunas University of Technology. She worked as a programmer before rediscovering her creative drive after becoming a mother. This led her to work as a professional photographer for ten years before the urge to paint emerged later in her life. Self-taught, Mili learned to paint by studying the works of foreign masters and reading English books on realism and impressionism. This self-directed learning allowed her to master the wet-on-wet technique, a method still relatively rare in Lithuania.
