Presentation of the artist
Self-taught, Paola Korga has made good use of her voluntary work in cultural mediation, her travels and her own experience of migration, to mix styles, patterns, techniques and materials from different cultures, in a personal elaboration.
Several stays in West Africa marked her palette loaded with the colors of the savannah and its sunsets, colors that she found in Bogolan fabrics, dyed with the leaves and roots of African plants and fixed with mud: ocra, earths, yellows, reds, oranges, browns...and indigo! But also all the shades of green in the rainy season...and then Kente and Adrinka patterns from Ghana!
The geometry of the masks fades into the silhouettes of African women, wrapped in their colorful boubous; from there are born his women with large skirts, who march to conquer the World: fairies, elves, dancers, queens, princesses and witches... As well as ladies who walk strange domestic animals...
The explosion in colors and patterns of wax fabrics, bought with both hands in the big markets of Dakar, Akkra, Kumasi and Banjul, led her to cut and rework them to reformulate new juxtapositions and harmonies of colors, work resembling to that of the Senegalese fashion designer By Fall, who collects pieces of wax to make the colorful uniform of Sufi beggars... in addition, she adds sand, pebbles, shells that she brings back from her stays on the shore of the ocean.
After fabrics, she discovered papers: her collages were enriched with tissue paper, rice paper, China paper, gift wrap, napkins and other recovery.
The figure of the woman who, with her creative strength and power, allows the world to exist and to continue on its way, despite the destructive forces at work in it, is exalted in the work of this Italian artist who lives and works in Switzerland.
