The Himba have agreed to live in a territory that no one wanted, the Kaokoland desert. Missionaries never succeeded in convincing Himba women to cover their breasts; moreover, all remained faithful to the animist traditions. Their beliefs are characterized by the worship of the ancestors, who, considered to be still alive but in another form, continue to concern themselves with the affairs of mortals and serve as messengers between their descendants and the gods. For the Himba people, who are a matriarchal society, women transmit property and inheritance rights. Owners of the herd, women play an essential role in society. Traditionally the Himbas dye their skin red with an ointment made from animal fat, ash and hematite powder. This ointment allows them to protect themselves from the heat of the sun, the dryness of the air, insects. The women comb their hair with care; the shape of the braids, and their accessories give information on their situation (married, of age to be...). After their marriage, they braid their hair and adopt the wearing of a small goatskin hat called "errembe". They wear copper bracelets, necklaces and the "ohumba", a white shell, a symbol of fertility.
