I know that it is impossible to talk about my work. And since it's impossible for me or anybody else to talk about my work, I feel I might as well talk about it. (Barnett Newman)
The paintings of Belgian artist Christoph are abstract explorations of memory and moments. Christoph describes his process as intuitive and instinctive, a journey to unlock his unconscious and release the marks life has left on his feelings and experiences. He works with bold, gestural application of acrylics and a meticulous application of oil paint, and through his abstract approach, the artist finds the freedom to express himself without censorship or restraint, although there is an internal logic to his work that emerges over time. His painting style also reflects his consciousness of the transient nature of things and the precarious bonds that hold people together.
"Christoph describes himself as a “man of the night,” but in many of his pieces there is an element of light, a break in the canvas through which he and the viewer enter. He comments that through his paintings he aims to discover more about himself – a self-reflective experience that may be shared by a sensitive viewer."
Painting is an exploration of matter, energy, and mind and their interplay and connectedness. My choice of colour and application are governed by my instinctive, "feeling" mind.
While painting, I become immersed in the visual reaction to the colours changing, dissolving, and reappearing. I sometimes apply transparent layers of colour which create illusions of atmosphere - gas, liquid, smoke, dust, steam or changing surfaces of water, corrosion, ice and chemicals. But they are not really illusions; they are simply what they are - a painted surface.
What was once solid paint and matter has now transformed into something stimulating mind-energy.
I also notice, that during the painting event, my mind has become sensitive, sharp, and aware.
