The elk skin was processed primitively using ancient technologies. All paints are earth -derived powders, mixed with animal glues, and tattooed deeply into the skin with sticks. This is historic methodology.
The thunderbird was a common religious totem in First Nations culture. He was often seen as a protector and carrier of prayers to the Great Spirit.
As were the originals and due to primitive process techniques, these skins are not flawless. They may have sewn bullet or arrow wounds or knife scoring on the backside. This piece has numerous sewn scars that can be seen from the painted side. Paint has been distressed to create patina and earth pigment painting does not lend itself as readily to super fine lines as do modern paints. This is a fine piece and would make an awesome addition to a boardroom wall, hotel lobbies, high-end log homes, collections, etc. It begs to be shown off. It looks bold and old!
