Cuatro patas grandes y fuertes…
En los consabidos registros del idioma, la palabra taburete, remitida específicamente a Cuba, designa una silla rústica de CUATRO PATAS GRANDES Y FUERTES. A lo anterior se añade que el mueble en cuestión está constituido además por un asiento y un respaldo de piel de chivo sin curtir. El taburete es, en efecto, un mueble rústico pero muy práctico, resistente y aunque no sea del todo cómodo, resulta agradable para un buen descanso. Sus cualidades relevantes no se asocian sin embargo a su morfología, sino más bien a su historia, a la tradición, a la leyenda. Viejos guajiros atestiguan longevidades increíbles a algunos de sus taburetes, que han estado resistiendo las “sentadas” de varias generaciones de parientes. Experimentados artesanos continúan una bien arraigada tradición de hacer taburetes, a pesar de los años transcurridos desde que se emplazó por vez primera el mueble en nuestro medio, manteniendo sus diseños básicos y ensayando una y otra vez variaciones en sus estructuras y materiales, en sus colores y tamaños. Se dice que en Arroyo Seco, a fuerza de transacciones sucesivas de habilidades, se mantiene vivo en el imaginario colectivo la fórmula del taburete. Probablemente de allí partió el interés de los hermanos Cabalé para articular su muestra mas emblemática de los últimos tiempos. Ellos, en resonancia con el espíritu de su padre, quizás de algunos más lejanos de la familia, decidieron convertir al taburete en el protagónico de su quehacer y darle a este mueble de singular referencia local un sentido nuevo, mediante expediente de formas sugerentes y entronizaciones simbólicas.
En efecto, los Cabalé, a quienes identificamos como hábiles creadores de muebles de diversos géneros y con bien diferentes propósitos, para variados emplazamientos, les vemos ahora dotando al taburete de una singular referencialidad. Las piezas realizadas obedecen a diseños sui generis que ponen al mueble en cuestión en “poses” de familia, con cierta dosis de ironía, un fino sentido del humor, auténtico modo de ser y expresarse la cubana convivencia. Las alusiones van desde la relación padre-hijo hasta la pareja “encabalgada”, pasando por la “tía meona” o la enigmáticas “divorciadas”. Un gigantesco taburete “padre” constituye sin dudas una pieza atrayente no solo por sus dimensiones en sí mismas, sino sobre todo por su alto valor simbólico, que lo constituye en el exponente de mayor fuerza expresiva. No es menester aquí detenernos en exceso de las soluciones buscadas por estos reconocidos artesanos artistas en cuanto a material y acabados. Baste decir que se propusieron taburetes con la mayor simplicidad posible, sin pretensiones especiales en cuanto a texturas y calados. Intentaron así preservar al taburete en su más original forma y buscar en los diseños correspondientes, atrevidos y fantasiosos, los ordenes preferentes de su caracterización escultórica. A esto último obedece la sabia decisión de situar las piezas sobre pedestales especialmente diseñados con esos fines. De este modo el discurso poético del taburete consagra a este mueble, lo eleva al rango de trono, enfatiza la relevancia que le ha sido otorgada en el ámbito de la familia campesina y cubana en general, su lugar ganado y reconocido por lo mejor, lo más persistente y genuino de nuestra cultura popular.
