Here is the famous Quetzalcoatl, also called the feathered serpent.

Quetzalcoatl is the name given, in central Mexico, to one of the incarnations of the feathered serpent, who was one of the main pan-Mesoamerican deities. In central Mexico he is known in the Postclassic period as Ehecatl-Quetzalcoatl

The snake is hand-sculpted in terracotta in its vertical position and has been decorated with natural green-gold iridescent golden pheasant feathers, blue oak jay feathers (origin: France), and iridescent blue Lady Armherst pheasant feathers. (Oirigne: Great Britain), black spinning rooster feathers with iridescent green reflections (Oirigne: Great Britain), white spinning rooster feathers, and Vulturine guinea fowl feathers (origin: France).

The snake's eyes were decorated with round beads of natural American turquoise (origin: Ithaca). The scales and head of the snake were highlighted using iridescent turquoise blue, iridescent green and gold paints.

The oldest and most enduring symbolic aspect of the feathered serpent appears to be agricultural in nature. Indeed, from those ancient times until today, indigenous peoples have associated it with the growth cycle of corn, comparing the plant's green leaves to quetzal feathers and the ears to snake scales.

As is often the case in Mesoamerican thought, the symbolism of the feathered serpent is imbued with dualism: it is both linked to the earth, by the serpent, and to the sky, by the feathers of the bird. It is the complete opposite of the Judeo-Christian dualism which separates the body and the spirit: heaven and earth, through the symbolism of the feathered serpent, are one. This is a strong monist symbol, with two inseparable polarities.
