Voyage imaginaire dans la forêt sacrée
Balla Ndao, ce grand féru du Fer, ne cesse de progresser et d’approfondir ses recherches depuis sa première exposition Individuelle Africain debout » à la Gare ferroviaire de Dakar et dont je fus le commissaire dans le cadre du OFF de la Biennale de Dakar en 2014. Deux ans après, en 2016, son exposition le « Voyage africain » à la Galerie Poulet de Gruissan en France a eu un grand succès. En 2017, il est sélectionné pour la première fois aux « Jeux de la Francophonie » d’Abidjan en Côte-d’Ivoire. Balla aime représenter le vide. Le plein ne l'intéresse pas. Voilà pourquoi ses œuvres ne sont jamais fermées. C'est au spectateur d'imaginer les choses qui vont remplir ce vide. Il donne vie au fer qu'il manie avec un savoir-faire et une habileté extraordinaires et fait surgir des femmes libres. Il invite ainsi à la participation des femmes dans les centres de décision et les processus de développement. Il sculpte la femme africaine qui réclame ses droits à la liberté, à l'information, à l'éducation et à la parité. Il représente la femme qui ose, la femme qui ne dépend plus ni financièrement ni individuellement de l'homme. Le rôle de la femme dans la société ne peut être réduit à celui d'une domestique ou à un simple objet sexuel. On ne peut non plus lui imposer une vie qu'elle n'a pas forcément choisie : l'excision ou le mariage forcé. La liberté est inaliénable.
Il revient avec force et dextérité dans cette 13e édition de la Biennale dans une exposition OFF intitulée La Femme et l’Arbre. Ces belles sculptures gigantesques, des hybrides mi-humains mi-végétaux, renvoient aux lieux de communication privilégiés avec les entités surnaturelles. Un travail très soigné et bien inspiré, fait par des matériaux de récupération, de toile de jute, goudron, fer, terre, plastique, matière végétale, etc.
Balla nous invite à un voyage imaginaire dans une forêt sacrée où les lieux de cultes font l’objet de prescriptions rituelles dont le non-respect peut provoquer des calamités (épidémies, sécheresses/pluies trop abondantes) mettant en péril l’avenir de la société. L’Africain croit en un univers relationnel où il n’y a pas de rupture entre le visible et l’invisible. C’est que comme le dit très justement John Mbiti dans son ouvrage Religions et philosophies africaines, « il n’existe pas de distinction formelle entre l’aspect spirituel et l’aspect matériel de l’existence ». Le bois sacré est un pilier de la société traditionnelle africaine. Il abrite les divinités protectrices des villages ou des royaumes. Il peut aussi être un lieu d’initiation ou d’inhumation.
Ces arbres sacrés ou ces autels sont liés aux rites de la fécondité ; ce sont des lieux cultuels pour les âmes des morts, pour invoquer la pluie, le retour à la paix ou pour conjurer le sort. les scupltures animaux namade
Balla NDAO est un sculpteur autodidacte. Il était très jeune quand son père avait remarqué sa facilité de créer, et lui a aménagé un espace au sein de la maison avec tous les outils nécessaires pour ses créations. Tout jeune, il commence ainsi à créer des oeuvres artistiques ; ce qui lui a permis d’être de plus en plus performant et d’être aujourd’hui un professionnel en la matière. Sa pratique s'est améliorée avec de beaucoup de recherches et d’investigations sur le fer qui sa matière de prédilection. Il travaille avec la main et le fer lui obéit sans résistance. Ses sculptures sont inspirées de l’histoire et de la culture africaines.
Cette exposition est une suite de l'exposition "Africain debout" que l'artiste avait présenté dans le OFF de la Biennale 2014. Des sculptures géantes faites pendant la Biennale, il passe ici à des sculptures en miniature. Balla travaille principalement avec le fer galva qui lui permet de représenter ce vide dont il a besoin dans ses créations. Il aime représenter le vide. Le plein ne l'intéresse pas. Voilà pourquoi ses oeuvres ne sont jamais fermées. C'est au spectateur d'imaginer les choses qui vont remplir ce vide.
Pour fabriquer ses personnages, Balla commence d'abord par la forme humaine. Il utilise ensuite le mastique, une matière qui lui permet de travailler le fer et de lui donner la forme et l'éclat qu'il veut. Il met enfin une peinture antirouille et une couleur marron pour la finition.

SENEGAL-CULTURE-BIENNALE Vernissage, à 18h, d?une exposition de sculptures à la Gare de Dakar 2014-05-12 13:44:55 GMT Dakar, 12 mai (APS) - L?artiste sénégalais Balla Ndao procédera, lundi à 18h à la gare ferroviaire de Dakar, au vernissage de son exposition intitulée "L'Afrique debout", présentant des sculptures dans le programme "Off" de la 11ème édition de la Biennale de l'art africain contemporain (Dak'Art, 8 mai-9 juin). "L?exposition est riche de cinq ?uvres majeures composée d?une trentaine de pièces", indique un communiqué reçu à l'APS, rappelant que ces réalisations sont présentes jusqu'à la clôture de la biennale. "Habile et créatif, Balla Ndao donne vie au fer, manie avec dextérité le métal pour faire surgir des personnages qui incarnent une Afrique créative, productive et un monde en pleine mutation."
