Lunacy acculturation.
This is a debut. The first exhibition “12 photos from the “36 types of full moon” cyclus and images” by Yana Zerkalova presents us the works, flexibility (the author explains that she, as an architect, thinks three-dimensionally) and deliberateness (staging for taking photos is equal to the intentional artificiality) of which are obvious. Even in the natural phenomena. Twelve pictures, defined by author as central and determining the name of the whole exhibition, should ideologically, if not visually, assemble the exposition. This becomes possible owing to the mentioned flexibility (we shall say that it is exclusively inherent to the photographer so far) and… fetishism. Just so, because fetish is a metalanguage relating to the magical thinking, it is an object, alienated from the meanings initially put in it, which fascinates you by form, and after that it is put in another abstraction system. Moreover, it is endowed with desire code.
That is why sacrament, exoticism, stylishness, eroticism, shamanism, mystery effect of which is created by the author specially, are very noticeable.
This is making a fetish, as said before, of the Moon and unconcealed admiration for Japanese culture as a civilization type. Hence appears some kind of hieroglyphic style of Moon depicturing in the main cyclus, that was made voluntarily by making photos with agile camera in order to give flexibility and movement (attention) to the flat sky.
This exposition show us famous art critics as characters (and we see motion, gesture); the series about female warrior does not bring us to another topic as we deal with a person, who conceptually and by intuition stands for cultural anthropology.
Hence comes out the aim of the exhibition: not only “to familiarize with her works”, but also to update other characteristic of the visual environment perception.
One of the cultural anthropology doctrines is acculturation, i.e. investigation of contact types which bring about changes in the initial culture patterns. Acculturation is a process of traditions and habits transmission in the free choice situation although we can always witness imitation of models and not always their integration into the existing system. And the variability of frames of cultural characteristics acceptance, selection of elements depends on the conditions of contact, which we do not technically have with Japan as yet. And due to this it develops into fetishism and idealization which mast of us, to say the truth, need badly.
That is why Yana Zerkalova’s reminiscence of magical attractiveness of the hyperreal Moon on Kuinji canvases is so nice and symbolical.
These photos are the result of individually responsible portraying, staging and reconstitution of her own images. I do not think that these images are, as the author hopes, pleasant to the eye, but they can cause the new way of vision that push you to search for and to comprehend the system of cultural guidelines where the high technology can return ecological natural environment and opportunity to feel psychological comfort to the human beings. As the life in the sublunary world has many advantages, especially for the creative minds. And it is lamentably and wonderful to find yourself in the situation shown in the film “Lost in Translation”.

Lost in Translation»

....................Beauty and self-sufficiency of these works introduce you the life and objects of ancient Egypt culture. Aestheticism and play with architectural sculptural constructions, which have become the symbols of human civilization long ago, influence world civilization integrally. The author interprets beauty and self-sufficiency of antiquity as correlation to detachment, abstractness of heat, when the sense melts, passes to another, deeper sense level.Symbols of eternity and importance of art culture gain the quality of background implication, which are only to illuminate irreality of existence........
....................It turns out that to live as easily as in the history textbook is not so difficult. That is why one wants to revert to the interpretations: they have more affectation and probably foreboding of evil, prediction that the ice of abstraction and symbols easily becomes sizzler, and also because a person setting forth in search of exotica often is unable to understand and should not notice the authenticity of people, whose existence still complies with customs and nothing more. That is the reason why photos by Yana Zerkalova engender great amount of associative steps, which, to the authors’ surprise, are created by real world.............
Uta Kilter (critic).
Exhibited works make up two parts, main one is “ritsumi”. It is the traditional Japanese technique going back to the Dark Ages and used mainly in the book graphic arts of Kamakur period. The sense of “ritsumi” is in unique “reanimation” of stationary picture, achieved by interaction between the colours with different wave characteristics or elements, photographed from short distances. Double images create microfilm, which is the one to reveal the real context of the photo. For example, the Pyramids eternal immobility of which is, as a result, “debunked” with flickering effect, or portrait of a woman in Nefertiti’s attire, whose gesticulation makes the image of stately queen somewhat simpler.
Monochrome photos are made in the spirit of the beginning of the twenties century and reflect measured of settled deliberation of the contemporary Egyptians’ way of life.
The author underlines that the presented photos does not have for an object to insult national shrines or religion of Egypt.
Zerkalova Yana (The information is fiction)

"From Odessa to Paris with photos of Abkhazia"
Young Odessa photographer Yana Zerkalova has been to Paris and has taken part in the project of the fourth session of the “École Sauvage” school. Organizer of the art evening, composer Mr. Kamil Tchalaev, is in blood relationship with Odessa: his grandfather Yakov Kaplun and grandmother Fima Lebedinskaya studied in Odessa Musical Dramatic Institute. And now, after many years (this year Yakov Kaplun would have turned one hundred years), Kamil visited the land of his ancestors. Here he got acquainted with Yana Zerkalova, both as a photographer and the one studying the philosophy of dance. Her pictures made in destroyed Abkhazia, in former grandmother’s house, where Yana came back after the seventeen years long separation from her “small homeland”, impressed composer Mr. Kamil Chalaev and his wife choreographer Mrs. Sabina greatly. And they invited Yana to Paris to take part in their project where photo goes hand in hand with music, and dance is combined with painting. The “Black series” exhibition by Yana Zerkalova was held in the Paris Seventh Arrondissement Association House. The attempt was the successful. And now New Independent Academy (the head of which is Nina Rausch de Traubenberg) looks for a chance to invite Yana Zerkalova to a year study course in Paris. Photos made by Yana in Paris in 2007 will be exposed in May in “Clarabara” restaurant (The City Garden).

Yana Zerkalova: Silver dreams
Yana Zerkalova burst into the circle of Odessa photographers unexpectedly and swiftly.
In fact, taking no part in collective vernisages, she presented two personal exhibitions – in Odessa Eastern and Western art museum and in Odessa’s citizens World Community. Personal exhibition in Paris followed. The point is that the supervisor of the coming exhibition in France saw her works and was so interested that proposed her to bring to Paris series of her works that can be called “Abkhazian tragedy”.
Why Abkhazia? The story should be told from the very beginning. Yana was born in Sukhumi, she went to school there. Her grandfather was a photographer. And everyone lived in peace and harmony till 1991… She could hardly think at that time that she will have to escape from belligerent Abkhazia, spend one year in Greece and then move to Ukraine. Here she graduated from architectural department, became designer and… became keen on photography.
Journey to Abkhazia after many years, photos of her destroyed house, of general shelterlessness and lawlessness is the theme of her first exhibition in Paris.
I write about her first exhibition because now Yana thinks about the second one. The one without cataclysms and troubles. Here woman will be in chief. And her search is a silver dream, way from live, sensual body to sculpture, marble, eternity. And plasticity, light and colour, depth of space are extremely important for it. Yana presents to our readers one of her new series of works for the first time.

Paris in by Yana Zerkalova.
The exhibition is quite not bad! It shows Paris as socio-cultural phenomenon. It is called socio-cultural due to the inseparable existence of SOMETHING (air, atmosphere and many other), what is pictured is there. It is called socio-cultural because combination of architecture, special relations style, behaviour (flexibility), proximity to life is observed in the exposition.
Here we can see another Paris which the French are proud of: Paris with new advanced technologies, they are under photomontage. The author displays the object, shows it in different versions, from different perspectives, three-dimensionally. Combination of anthropogenic works with pleasant, sweetheart, postcard cyclus gives you opportunity to meet the city as well as to feel something new (and fresh) that witnessed Yana Zerkalova personally.
Series of photos (instantaneity plus message clearness) are not at all reportorial, but all the same have documentary value and in spite of obvious privacy are the EVIDENCE (I confirm that I have even found a couple of my favourite places).
Here we can single out the image (just so!) of the Eiffel Tower, which has become recognizable and hackneyed symbol (some time before) of the technical progress. In the exhibition it is disjoint into lacy fiery- warm traceries (paradigm shift) and therefore reflects exactly present-day frame of the Parisians’ mind, where rap can lay the groundwork for aesthetic, stirring dance performance.
Although one should start from the name, especially when it is intentionally given in the encoded form: “Paris” is clear, “collage” (not so, but) is also clear – it is present; although it is not only a collage. And the “poste” is a message to us, a post. Written in French! And the “com” is quite easy – it is communication. (Or maybe expression of hope (wish) for some COMmercial effect - photo art works as something to be acquired and be worshipped).
Sophisticated name - , but not for those who use internet; and if you consider photography to be one of the types of modern art, that goes “hand in hand” with other types (nowadays so called “electronic art”) of up-to-the-minute technological arts, namely: video art, video made with mobile phones, photos made by these cellys, internet art, interactive art... stop. This exhibition has only a few anthropogenic innovations – computer collaging (justification of which is disputed by orthodox photographers- traditionalists).
And topically – hah! There is hardly the one who has not been to Paris! “French spring in Ukraine” has just finished with the wonderful film “Paris, je t'aime”, and before it there was another one…, and another. However, Paris for every European (and not only for European) is his “Sacre coeur” (“Saint heart” – the name of the Cathedral, rising above the Montmartre); and not even the heart, but the concentration of such “Europeanness”, which is everywhere there. Yet first comes the charm of authenticity. Authenticity of everything.

Photo exhibition by Yana Zerkalova
This is a camera exposition. The aim of the project is to give those inhabitants of Odessa, who seldom leave Ukraine, the opportunity to feel themselves in the world centre of art and culture – in Paris. This exposition presents several collages and a series of works performed in a monochrome mode. Photo collages help to share illusion of reminiscence about this city as easy as possible.
Exhibition name () should be decoded: first two words are understandable. Name in the e-mail form as well as the whole exhibition symbolize some kind of message of Parisians to the people of Odessa. Here you will see situations and moments of people communication with each other (addition COM comes from here). You will feel something very intimate and native both in communication and in people relations.
As for me, Paris is as if Odessa was multiplied by fifty. Looking at some pictures you can hardly tell one city from another. This project gives the inhabitants of Odessa possibility to feel their immixture with so unique and magical place on the Earth and to find for themselves parallels and crosspoints through the small camera message. Parisians adore Odessa and if you say that you are from Odessa, they “melt” literally.
This exposition is remarkable by another one reason – this is the first exhibition to open in the restored City garden, one of the most wonderful faces of our city, and is a present for all fellow citizens.

Sacre coeur»
