Transfiguration 14 (2020)
Memories are often inaccurate and biased according to our beliefs, expectations and hopes, as well as our life experiences. How we process visual input is also affected by these personal characteristics. Ask two people to describe the exact same place they have both just visited and you will receive two differing descriptions regarding the details. What we recall, how we recall, and the hierarchy of importance are highly individualized.
I'm an American artist currently living in South Korea. I have been a painter for over 30 years mainly in oil abstraction although I do paint watercolor landscapes. The different medium and subject inform my work in ways I might not otherwise in terms of painting approaches and technique. Much like watercolor, I work in several layers in oil, sometimes translucent glazes and others thinning down the paint to flow like water. However, the subject is more important in terms of the connection of the landscape to my abstract work. My abstractions are references to the relationships of landscape and figure.
