Eryk Maler (an artistic pseudonym), Polish painter – born in Nowa Sól in 1959 – in painting often unjustly characterized as a self-taught person; his father was also; among others, a painter and a photographer, a place where the painter brought-up – Stara Wieś (lubuskie province) located among woods and fields over great Oder river, all completed with a brook – stream full of crawfish and fish: roaches and burbots, flowing out of nearby small, but at that time attractive, lake (Gruszwickie Lake), where he bathed and dived together with a host of village band composed mainly of girls, thanks to which he finally earned a name of “women’s king” and this was his beginning of woman fascination as a subject of his later paintings. It is significant that this village, and a neighboring one, that is Kiełcz, is rich in trees as magical and esoteric as willows, pollarded and growing back again and again; for him it is sort of another symbol associated with eternally re-born phoenix. The fascination of Leon Wyczółkowski painting is connected with a naturally attractive place where the painter spent his childhood taming hawks for hunting and raising tawny owls in a pigeon loft since they seem to be characterized with greater amount of romantic qualities, and more importantly, with greater mysteriousness so to say. The great influence on the painter creative activity has had his first unhappy love with which he could not get through for almost 20 years till he found a way to fall out of love; and he described this way in a manuscript entitled „Perpetuum mobile” where he analyzes poor social relations and pressure of both state, surroundings, that is, the family, acquaintances, and friends, as well as, the humankind itself – put on an individual, which a single person is, controlled by typical, often destructive mechanisms, which just after birth are within the equipment of his own brain, added free of charge, like a free time bomb with a fuse, which should start automatically in a right moment for a species, not for a individual; he also mentions there about other mechanism, possessed by most of the people, and which makes analyzing the above subject impossible – as if it is not convergent to the aims of program of human brain, of an individual who is predestined by the kind to a specific faith, and whom the state is trying to impose another unconvergent and destructive course of action. Many of those who cannot control it terminate their life with a suicide – since their own brain keeps telling...
