Arnold Bocklin est né à Bâle le 16 octobre 1827. Il est connu comme l'un des artistes symbolistes les plus importants d'Europe au XIXe siècle. De 1845 à 1847, il suit des cours de dessin à la Kunstakademie de Düsseldorf. Son père était commerçant. En 1847, il part étudier en Belgique. Là, l'œuvre de Pierre Paul Rubens l'impressionne beaucoup. Lors de ses voyages suivants, il se rend en Suisse et aux Pays-Bas. En 1848, il se rend à Paris pour étudier au Louvre. En 1850, à Bâle, il peint ses premiers paysages au style affirmé. Il travaille à Rome de 1850 à 1857, où il passe beaucoup de temps avec les "vieux maîtres" (le terme "vieux maîtres" dans l'art de la peinture désigne des artistes du 14e au 18e siècle et leurs œuvres sont résumées). En 1859, son tableau "Pan dans les roseaux" le rend plus célèbre. Le peintre aime peindre des scènes de la nature. Il est mort à San Domenico, près de Florence, le 16 janvier 1901.
