If I am painting a pot I do not like to find a pot staring back at me from the canvas. But I need the pot because I need the triangle: me, the canvas and the subject. I enjoy looking at the world and through my canvas building up a relationship with what I am looking at over a period of time. So in fact I am never painting a pot, but something over there of which the pot is an element. And as I say, for me the triangle is essential: there is a shifting relationship going on between me and the canvas, me and the subject and between the canvas and the subject (and sometimes the canvas seems to be revealing the subject, creating the subject, so that often I have no idea where the painting is going to go and if I did I don’t think I would like to paint).
