John Silver Kimani is a contemporary Kenyan visual artist living and working in Nairobi. From a young age, he demonstrated a passion for painting, eventually choosing to pursue a career as a professional artist. Inspired by the vibrant artistic communities of Banana Hill and the Ngecha region, Kimani played a pivotal role in establishing the Banana Hill Art Studio alongside fellow local artists.
Specializing in oil paintings and color prints of woodblock prints, Kimani's artworks have garnered acclaim both locally and internationally. His pieces have been featured in exhibitions across Kenya, as well as in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Japan. A testament to his talent, many of his works have been acquired by private collectors and art enthusiasts spanning continents, including Kenya, Tanzania, India, Canada, Great Britain, the United States, Russia, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
Driven by a desire to nurture the burgeoning interest in visual arts among young Kenyans and visitors alike, Kimani actively engages in teaching and mentoring aspiring artists. He believes that artistic expression lies within everyone, and through sharing his knowledge and skills, he aims to cultivate a vibrant community of visual artists in Kenya.
Currently affiliated with the Kuona Trust Artist Center, Centre for Visual Arts in Kenya, Kimani spends the majority of his time in Studio 16, where he brings his dreams and fantasies to life through textures and colors. In 2015, he received the prestigious title of "best printer of the year" from the Fei Art Museum in Yokohama, Japan, a remarkable accolade considering the rich tradition of woodblock printing in Japanese culture.
As recognition of his talent and contribution to the art world grew, Kimani was honored with a solo exhibition following the award, further solidifying his reputation as an artist of exceptional caliber. Notably, his distinctive style has drawn comparisons to the intricate and surrealistic works of Hieronymus Bosch, earning him the affectionate nickname "Africa's Hieronymus Bosch" in the Netherlands. Kimani's art captivates viewers with its complexity and early surrealistic influences, establishing him as a prominent figure in contemporary African art.
