"Un aveugle de naissance à qui on donnerait la vue ne verrait dans un premier temps que des taches de couleurs collées à son oeil" m'a-t-on expliqué un jour. Bien sûr, il faut éduquer le cerveau (perspective, contour, lumière) pour que ces taches soient décryptées en une vision figurative.
Et serait-ce là l'abstraction? Ces taches de couleurs non décodées? Cette perception du monde en un instant T où ces taches n'ont pas encore été comparées,identifiées et agencées dans notre grille de lecture du monde?
L'essentiel de l'oeuvre de Joël Porta se meut dans cette frontière floue, mouvante et impalpable qui sépare ou plus précisément qui unit l'abstrait et le figuratif.

Depuis le jour lointain - près de vingt ans -, où je l'ai vu gribouiller sur un papier froissé et au stylo bille un petit dessin qui laissait déjà entrevoir un univers intérieur étrange et remarquable, jusqu'à ses peintures informatiques d'aujourd'hui (en passant par l'aquarelle, la gouache, l'acrylique et l'huile), j'ai pu observer Joël Porta travailler sans relâche, jour après jour et des heures durant à la mise à jour - dans le plaisir et parfois la douleur - de son univers pictural unique et d'une force imparable.
Qui l'a vu se servir de sa palette graphique, jonglant comme au hasard avec les logiciels, sait que Jackson Pollock avait raison qui disait que "Toute grande peinture invente ses propres techniques".
Qui est parti en balade dans ses paysages flamboyants et intimes - Joël Porta ne peint pas de nature ni d'après document -, sait que Pierre Bonnard ne se trompait pas qui disait "Il ne s'agit pas de peindre la vie mais de rendre vivante la peinture".
