Julian Vandercook has been working with clay and metal for over ten years. He started working with clay at a Phoenix parks and recreation facility, The Phoenix Center. He worked with their resident artists, Jeff Schmucki and Alan Jones for five years as a studio assistant. He began working with metal at Phoenix College through their vocational welding program taught at Metro Tech. Julian then went on to attend Arizona State University and graduated with concurrent B.F.A degrees in ceramics and sculpture. His work focuses heavily on the material that he uses (clay and metal) as well as abstracted human forms. Julian believes that his stark aesthetic and heavy-handed use of texture come from experiences as a child at Orme School, a small boarding school where his parents taught until he was five and his life in Phoenix, where he currently lives. Other influences in his work are his fascination with the extremities of life in a city in the middle of a desert, an ongoing curiosity about human and social interaction and a true love of his material, clay and metal.
