The Alchemist of salvaged material.
They are made from various shades of wood, ranging from light to very
dark: mahogany, rose wood, purau, pistachio, miki miki, teak or coconut.
The birds, fish, and shell-fish, poised on their stands and cleverly
articulated, give an impression of luxury and peaceful tranquillity.
Nevertheless they have all been worked out of salvaged material such as
wood shavings, fish bones, teeth and backbones, stones and fibre.
Hansjörg Stübler is the author, craftman and sculptor of this
extraordinary alchemy. He has been living in Moorea for four years.
Nothing seemed to predestine this pharmacist of German origin to become
sculptor, except perhaps his passion for giving life to matter of all
descriptions. He first of all satisfies his creative desire by
renovating old houses in Europe. Then he rapidly salvages wood and
various other materials for making furniture and picture frames,
especially for the paintings of Nataly Jolibois, his companion.
The nearness of the lagoon in Moorea awakens other desires in Hansjörg
Stübler inspiring him to create unique pieces of sculpture that are
genuine hymns to nature. Each vein, groove and knot of these forgotten
pieces of wood are magnifird until they become the very quintessence of
the essence; each work is then polished to preserve them as living
objects – if they were varnished, they would become rigid and die. Each
new piece of salved material is a beginning of a new story…
