Mes premiers souvenirs de peintures sont les odeurs de térébenthine qu’utilisait mon père dans son atelier quand il peignait. J’étais fasciné, je restais devant la porte en attendant la permission de pénétrer.
Je me rabattais alors sur une petite boîte de gouache et remplissais des kilomètres de papier. Adolescent je passais des heures à fabriquer des marionnettes, des décors, à dessiner et peindre.
Je ramassais des cailloux, bois flottés, coquillages, des rogatons naturels qui m’intriguaient, je continue de chasser ces éléments qui me parlent et m’ouvrent l’imagination.
J’entasse, je tourne autour, j’assemble, je construis un monde parallèle où se télescope ma vie, ce que j’ai appris de mes parents, de mon passage aux Beaux Arts de Paris, de ma curiosité des peuples non cartésiens où l’esprit n’est pas séparé du corps, où l’art fait un tout avec l’humain.
La naissance de mes enfants me révèle un univers peuplé de personnages hybrides, mi-hommes mi-mantes, le ventre ouvert, nu, marqué d’une griffure, d’une signature…ma signature ?
Je raconte l’histoire des hommes : l’origine, la maternité, l’enfantement, le couple, la famille. Et ce monde habité, à la croisée de plusieurs chemins, est plein de souvenirs d’enfance : planches de dictionnaire sur les plantes, les squelettes d’animaux préhistoriques, les insectes, les fossiles…
Mes parents, collectionneurs d’art populaire, m’ont proposé un environnement chargé de matériaux, d’outils, de jouets, de sculptures ayant une histoire, un vécu, un mystère, tous porteurs de rêves pour l’enfant que j’étais . La toile sera abandonnée au profit de l’assemblage des matériaux : dosses, douelles, branches, papiers, collectés à la campagne où je vis.
En intégrant des éléments extérieurs à la peinture, celle-ci devient peut-être un objet fétiche, absorbant mes peurs, mes inquiétudes pour me permettre d’acquérir une certaine sérénité.
