So like most of my paintings I build up the image in monochrome first using a drawing and wash technique in burnt umber to establish the balance of tones. Then I paint in some detail the eyes and mouth in full colour as for me this is when the painting becomes alive. The next step is to build up the colours of the background the space the model exists in. Finally all the flesh tones and any remaining details are laid down.
For me the sequencing is crucial to creating an image that looks vital and alive.

I originally trained as a Graphic Designer however my life went in a different direction, doing an office job and raising a family but in the last few years I have returned to painting as a  hobby and semi professional career. I use oils ,as the medium conveys the effect of light on skin and the contrasting textures very effectively. I try to make my subjects look  beautiful passionate and real.
